An Update from DPAA President Amy Gardner

It has been quite a season for all of us — doing our best to survive and even thrive during the coronavirus pandemic, making sure our loved ones are safe and healthy, watching and in some cases participating in the tumultuous political landscape and, of course, trying to help The DP prosper and continue its tradition of exceptional journalism.

First, I’d like to offer a heartfelt thanks from the entire DPAA board to those of you who have contributed time or money to The DP in the past year. I am happy to share that the results of our efforts are real. We are successfully adapting to the multifaceted demands of being a 21st-century media organization. We are removing longstanding barriers to participation through a series of innovative initiatives, which include: the expansion of our flagship summer internship experience, a new DP Fellowship program which aims to attract and retain students of color to The DP,  and student salary stipends designed to create further incentive for students to dive into The DP experience and give it their all. This would not have been possible without the ongoing support of the DPAA. Many, many thanks!

I’d also like to urge you all to keep your eyes out this spring for a redesigned DPAA website and a brand new alumni competition called Masthead Madness, planned by our Development team and in partnership with students from our business side. I hope you’ll all participate!

  — Coming in March!

Our goal as an alumni association is to increase your connections to The DP, to harness your own experiences for the current student leadership and to create multiple avenues for all of you to participate and contribute in ways that work for you.

More to come soon!

Best,
Amy Gardner C’90

DP Raises $11,000 in 24 Hours on #GivingTuesday!

On December 1st, 2020, the DP managed to raise over $11,091 from 62 donors as part of the #Giving Tuesday campaign!

In collaboration with the DP design, A/V, and social media teams, the DPAA was able to reach out and tell the stories that matter! Through the duration of a 24 hour micro-campaign, we managed to tell our story in an email series, a webpage, and a video, all to raise money for the DP!

To visit the Always the DP campaign click here. For more info about #AlwaystheDP and #GivingTuesday the campaign, read on!

Always here. Always there. Always the DP. What does this mean?

  • Always the DP: We are and always have been an independent student-led organization! And we’ve always been focused on telling our educational non-profit media organization story.
  • Always Here: 136 years of learning, legacy and lineage… Current Penn students, alumni, and leadership have always been connected by the DP. It’s the heart of the Penn community!
  • Always There: 136 years of covering the news that matters most to the Penn community! The memorable moments, the important  days, the big stories– we’ve been there for it all, and most importantly, we’ve been there for you to make sure you’re always in touch with the stories that matter most!

The original announcement for the #GivingTuesday campaign:

Dear All,

My name is Liz Sunga, I am a first-year student at Penn’s College of Arts and Sciences and the DP’s first Development Assistant. I am excited to kick-start this year’s #GivingTuesday campaign: Always Here, Always There, Always the DP.

Today we celebrate The Daily Pennsylvanian’s long-standing and loyal commitment to the students, staff and alumni of the University of Pennsylvania.

We ask our DP alumni family to participate in three ways:

  1. Make your gift here
  2. Visit Always The DP
  3. Like, love, comment and share our posts, pics and messages throughout the day!

If you have been waiting or looking for the right time, the right moment or right reason to make a gift to the Daily Pennsylvanian, then your time has come. In a world where the value of free speech, free press and the dissemination of accurate information come into question everyday, an organization like ours is needed more than ever. What we learn through our work at the DP will help us lead important change in our world.

Thank you for all the opportunities you provide!

Warmly,

Annelisse S. Sunga

Development Assistant
